It has been a happy New Year for investors in oil exploration clients of Old Park Lane Capital (OPL). The UK’s definitive natural resources broker has reported that several of its oil & gas clients have outperformed the market significantly over the last month with key performers showing share price increases of up to 50%.

Michael Parnes, Founder and CEO of OPL, commented; “We always caution investors that frontier oil exploration stocks are predictably volatile and therefore carry an appreciable degree of risk. Many junior oil & gas exploration companies endured a tough time in 2011. However, with the market reacting to some very positive exploration stories in early 2012, the New Year has started strongly for several OPL clients.”

The news follows the announcement last week that OPL had successfully raised £5.25million for oil and gas exploration company, Range Resources. They and Red Emperor, with near term exploration activities focused on Puntland in Somalia, have shown explosive share price performances of 48% and 50% respectively since mid-December. The AIM All Share index has increased by only 8.2% over the same period.

Other notable share price performances from OPL clients over the last month include Argentine explorer, Andes Energia (25%) and Republic of Georgia focused, Frontera Resources (18%).

A cash-raising through Michael Parnes’ Old Park Lane Capital sent Range Resources from 2½p a share to 21p a share. The Australian oil group is a private investor favourite and has been well picked by Michael and his associates. On the day of the announcement it was the most traded stock in London. More than 100 million shares changing hands by 10am!

Range’s story is quiet interesting. They started by acquiring some potentially high impact exploration in Somalia. Though the potential profit was high, the terrain, socio-political instability and lack of infrastructure meant they were a little too risky for investors. To balance this out the senior management at range diversified into less speculative exploration acreage. After purchasing some onshore exploration sites in Trinidad they employed Old Park Lane to raise-cash through a share issue. Old Park Lane Capital advised snapping up the shares, saying: “The management is making huge progress de-risking the business while maintaining exposure to highly attractive exploration upside.”
